Based on your skills, experience and interests, we think you’d enjoy hearing about why Alastair feels so at home at Newton. Alastair joined us having spent seven years in design and development within the aerospace sector.

“You’re very much trusted to own your projects – the leadership team respects the fact that as a consultant, you’re much more immersed in the detail of a project. That said, there’s always support there if you need it.”

AL BUTLER TRANSFORMING AN INEFFICIENT SUPPLY CHAIN

Alastair (who prefers Al)  is always looking for new ways to solve complex problems. Recently, his team significantly boosted efficiency in a supply chain team by bringing 17 competing demands together into one plan, and developing new Digital tools to ensure 100 buyers could see what they needed to do each day. Working closely with the client’s own team, he also helped develop contract analytics and negotiation skills to ensure his client could demonstrate value-for-money for their own customer saving hundreds of millions of pounds. At Newton, you’ll be empowered to deliver some truly wide-reaching projects.

FOCUS ON DELIVERY

Our ability to deliver outcomes for clients rests on how deeply we understand their challenges and environment. Having joined us from industry, Al has drawn upon his own experiences to get to grips with what his clients need, and then create the best possible outcomes.

Al

“I have an understanding that comes from having been in the clients’ shoes. It helps me to understand the politics and stresses around their role which, in turn, helps me to build great relationships and ultimately, to deliver the right outcomes.”

QUICKFIRE QUESTIONS

How important is leadership to the Newton difference?

Al

“Leadership here makes all the difference - we lead by example. We don’t have a sales team at Newton because we believe you should see your work all the way through and learn from it. The client you guaranteed an improvement to a year ago is looking at you to deliver that change.”

– Al

What do we do differently to deliver for our clients?

Al

“As with many things, people at the working level know the issues. They’ve been surrounded by them for most of their careers. What Newton brings is the analytical horsepower to assess and prioritise those issues along with the digital and change capability to get after the problem, demonstrate it can be improved and ensure a sustainable solution.”

BALANCING WORK AND HOME

We’re a people business which is why our values underpin everything we do. Those values – Exceptional Performance, Professionalism with Respect, and Love our People – help us to ensure our clients get the very best levels of service, and that our people find fulfilment both in work, and outside of it.

Al

“We all try to live and breathe the Newton values and that makes a critical difference - there is no ‘good enough’ when it comes to looking after our People. We don’t just say ‘have a good work-life balance’, instead (for example) we share a golden rule to never work weekends, make our health and wellbeing central to how we work, and ensure great maternity and paternity policies”

POWERING YOUR PROGRESSION

As Al has discovered, we’re always wide open to fresh ideas. And we firmly believe everyone’s development should be driven by a sense of empowerment to try new approaches as well as through more formal trainin

Al

“I loved my old job, but before Newton I didn’t have the confidence, the capability or the imperative to get stuck in and make things better. Here, I get the training, experience and (quite honestly) surprising freedom to make the changes I always wanted to.”

– Al

SUPPORTING CLIENTS SIDE BY SIDE

At Newton, supporting clients isn’t just about building relationships at a senior, more strategic level. It’s also about looking at their challenges through the lens of the people experiencing them every day.

Al

“We invest the time to thoroughly understand our client organisations at all levels. It’s no good saying you understand what the problems are on a hospital ward without talking to the doctors, nurses, therapists, porters, cleaners – all the people who know what’s actually going on and what we need to fix.”

– Al

EXPERIENCE LIFE ON CLIENT SITE

Al enjoys spending time on site as he thinks it’s crucial to building a better rapport, a bigger picture, a deeper relationship and a stronger understanding of what needs to change, when and how.

Al

“Working on site does usually mean you’re away from home for some of the week – although increasingly less so as you get more Senior. But in many ways, being onsite is the part of the job I enjoy the most. You feel less like an advisor and more like an integral part of the team. You end up talking about things not connected to your work. You might even get to know your clients as friends and go down to the pub for a beer.”

– Al

SHARING EXPERIENCES WITH THE WHOLE COMPANY

Whatever your interests and passions, Newton offers plenty of opportunities for colleagues to work together and make an impact beyond their immediate client projects, whether that’s through knowledge sharing, all-company initiatives or advancing a cause that has a personal significance.

Review days

Our fortnightly review days are a brilliant opportunity not only for our people to connect with each other, but also to share ideas, bring fresh perspectives and collectively tackle the most complex challenges in an open, relaxed environment.

Inclusion and giving back

We have a number of employee resource groups designed to foster a diverse, inclusive working environment. There are also great opportunities to give back through the Newton Foundation – our people have been involved in everything from fundraising efforts for Alzheimer’s to mentoring students from underprivileged backgrounds to supporting programmes to tackle homelessness in the UK.

Al

“Everyone at Newton is scarily intelligent – but don’t worry, so are you. We don’t have an elitist culture because we all respect the skills and diverse thinking every individual can bring. It’s a very welcoming team – more like meeting new friends than new colleagues – and that’s made all the better because we get together on a regular basis, both at fun events and workshops where we ask questions, share ideas and give feedback.”
