SARAH GARNER GIVING OLDER PEOPLE THE BEST POSSIBLE CARE

One of Sarah’s most recent projects saw her working to improve healthcare outcomes for older people in Birmingham. How? By bringing various health and social care organisations together to deliver a joined-up approach. If you bring your career to Newton, you’ll be empowered to transform organisations – and change lives for the better. Just like Sarah.

FOCUS ON DELIVERY

Sarah enjoys reflecting on programmes after they’ve come to an end. She says that’s when she really gets to see how well she’s not only delivered upon the programme’s immediate objectives, but also how successfully the new ways of working she’s introduced have been embedded and embraced.

Sarah

“It’s all about what we leave behind, the legacy, and how the client now does things differently. You can really see the impact of what you’ve done at that stage, and it’s incredibly rewarding.”

QUICKFIRE QUESTIONS

What sort of background do people tend to come from?

Sarah

“When I joined as a graduate five years ago, most of the other graduates were from STEM backgrounds. But since then, it’s really diversified in terms of the academic backgrounds people come from, which has been great to see and has made us stronger as a whole.”

– Sarah

How well are you supported at Newton?

Sarah

“There’s always informal support available. And there are more formal support mechanisms too. For example, we have a fortnightly survey that goes to every single person which asks various questions around how you’re feeling at work. The brilliant thing about it is that this does get reviewed and acted upon.”

– Sarah

BALANCING WORK AND HOME

Every piece of work is different, with busy times and quieter moments. But for Sarah, no matter how challenging a project becomes, she never feels overwhelmed.

Sarah

“I always notice how much support there is around work-life balance and making sure things are manageable. And I feel I get wellbeing support, and mental health support, from just about everyone around me.”

– Sarah

POWERING YOUR PROGRESSION

For us, progression isn’t just about formal training. It’s also about making sure everyone here is surrounded by – and can learn from – people with different perspectives, backgrounds and areas of expertise. That’s one of the reasons why we’re so keen to introduce more diverse people into the business.

Sarah

“We’ve massively increased the diversity of thought within the business. It’s been really exciting and that’s the way we’ll ensure the future growth of ourselves as professionals, and of Newton as a whole.”

– Sarah

SUPPORTING CLIENTS SIDE BY SIDE

We immerse ourselves in our clients’ organisations, drawing upon our first-hand experiences of their day-to-day operations to create the most robust and effective solutions. For Sarah, that often involves streamlining or facilitating collaboration between different organisations.

Sarah

“In healthcare, there’s often an overlap, with people having to talk about their needs to different health and social care professionals across a number of organisations. One of my focuses is on ensuring people only have to share their story once, so they get the help they need much more smoothly.”

– Sarah

EXPERIENCE LIFE ON CLIENT SITE

We work on site with clients right across the UK. While this means sometimes spending time away from home, there is a lot of flexibility in lifestyle.

Sarah

“We often work on site and if that site happens to be a long way from home, we stay in hotels. But how that works in practice is pretty flexible depending on your priorities. There are no set expectations on you though, you can choose your own lifestyle while you’re working away.”

– Sarah

SHARING EXPERIENCES WITH THE WHOLE COMPANY

Whatever your interests and passions, Newton offers plenty of opportunities for colleagues to work together and make an impact beyond their immediate client projects, whether that’s through knowledge sharing, all-company initiatives or advancing a cause that has a personal significance.

Review days

Our fortnightly review days are a brilliant opportunity not only for our people to connect with each other, but also to share ideas, bring fresh perspectives and collectively tackle the most complex challenges in an open, relaxed environment.

Inclusion and giving back

We have a number of employee resource groups designed to foster a diverse, inclusive working environment. There are also great opportunities to give back through the Newton Foundation – our people have been involved in everything from fundraising efforts for Alzheimer’s to mentoring students from underprivileged backgrounds to supporting programmes to tackle homelessness in the UK.

Sarah

“When we’re away on site, some people will spend lots of time with the team and go out for dinners and things like that. Others prefer to have more downtime. Ultimately, how much and when you socialise is very much down to you.”

– Sarah
